issues + potential improvements of the bng

the bn system is fundamentally flawed and its irritating how the staff are misdiagnosing the problem as a problem with the people within the system rather than the system itself.

1. it's a thankless job

this is the biggest one. people are ungrateful shits who can't even spare the effort to read a userpage. imagine working retail, but you aren't paid and you have to deal with 14 year old kids and the occasional Karen (not u mordred). the sole personal incentive is b4b, and it's honestly incredible how many people care enough about pushing others' maps for free

2. the wrong metrics are rewarded

not making mistakes is the only thing that matters. you can have abysmal activity and afk for months without a single icon before getting kicked from bn, or you can go ham and incur a few more pops and out to probation you go.

3. people can't even have fun

idk who specifically it is but someone seems to have some idea that bns need to be professional robots who exist to check maps and can't even have fun with shitposting dqs like cmon lol. as if modding itself hasn't already slowly felt increasingly impersonal and isolated, people who make these rules are literally making the work even more mindnumbing.

anyone with 2 braincells can see how system literally incentivises bns to just afk and b4b for maps or circlejerk their friends. it's a miracle that they all don't.

these things contribute to the inevitable bn lifecycle of 1) go ham during the first month or so and maybe even help some new mappers 2) either get kicked, or burn out and afk/resign.

how can we fix this?

1. actual rewards.

idk why we aren't giving supporter to bns but ok lol... what about badges? and not just the x year service badges (cuz those literally incentivize afking).
badges for nominating 10/20/30 first rankeds? for nominating 40/80/120 different mappers?
badges get people to map ben briggs so maybe we could encourage bns actively seeking new mappers/different maps this way.

potential criticisms: encourages nominating questionable/maybe int maps from new or bad mappers for badge farm.

2. make fuckups less punishing and inactivity more punishing

not saying that pops/dqs and having a scuffed icon history shouldn't get you probo/kicked fyi. i just don't like how probation bns are basically treading on eggshells and the safest way for them to make it back to full is to like icon 2 maps and then peace out until theyr reinstated. relax punishments, and make activity requirements more stringent, but: icons on mappers w less than x ranked maps (lets say 3) should count for double activity or something.

potential criticisms: could be seen as more leeway to yolo experienced mappers, harder to get rid of bns who nominate shit maps but are active

3. stop sucking the fun out of the job

like jesus even actual paid jobs are more fun than the vision that certain individuals seem to have for bns lol. remove these stupid conduct rules and let bns shitpost as much as they want as long as the actual dq reason is somewhere in the post. the first line rule is some of the dumbest fucking shit.

potential criticisms: osu bns are staff and they represent osu staff so seeing stuff like "dqed because no tech mappers in the ranked section allowed" on aiess might alienate non-staff???? idk this is just a dumb argument imo

tl;dr: the whole loctav "if people are afk/abusing their bn permissions to circlejerk we should be punishing them, not fixing the system that literally encourages them to do so" is honestly the most backwards and entitled train of thought and it's how you end up with a dead qualified section.

while i am not, and have never been a bn, this was written after extensive conversation w multiple current/former bns and i also got their input on this.
