I had an epiphany today while writing. When playing pretend games with others as a child, I was always the male hero. When playing by myself, I was also always pretending I was a boy, and today it hit me why. It was the complete and utter lack of female super heroines. There were none. As in No One! The two references I had to women who where strong were She-ra (He-man's... Something) and Ronia the Robber's daughter. She-ra was a rental video so I didn't get a lot of time to connect with her. Ronia was cool, but she wasn't an actual super hero that could fly and stuff.

It was not because of transgender issues (a thought that has passed by in my brain sometimes),but because I wanted to be the hero, not the passive one being rescued. And all heroes were male, hence me thinking I have to be a boy to be tough.

The sad part in all of this, is I don't think things have changed that much since back in the 80's when I grew up. The only super heroine I can think of on the top of my head right now (not counting various X-(wo)men), is Sailor Moon. I mean, come on, World. We can do better than that!
